The greenhouse loomed before them, a large glass structure that seemed to blend in with the surrounding botanical garden. The vibrant colors of various exotic plants pressed against the glass, giving the illusion of a living, breathing entity. Jade couldn't help but marvel at the sight; it was as if they had stepped into another world entirely.
"Here's my pride and joy," John said, a faint smile on his lips as he unlocked the greenhouse door and held it open for Jade and Connor.
As they entered, the warm, humid air enveloped them, carrying the intoxicating scent of flowers and damp earth. Lush foliage surrounded them, with countless species of plants thriving under the meticulously controlled conditions. The canopy overhead filtered the sunlight, casting dappled shadows on the ground below.
Jade scanned the greenhouse, her eyes moving from one plant to the next, searching for the telltale white petals of a ghost orchid. Though she tried to keep her expression neutral, her heart raced with anticipation, half expecting to find the incriminating flower hidden among the greenery.
"Quite impressive," Connor commented, his tone carefully guarded as he too surveyed the greenhouse.
"Thank you," John replied, seemingly oblivious to their underlying suspicion. "I've spent many years cultivating this collection."
"Mr. Wiggle," Jade began, her voice firm yet respectful, "We're here because we need to know if there are any ghost orchids on your property. It's important that you be honest with us."
John looked genuinely perplexed. "I already told you, I haven't been able to get my hands on any. You're welcome to look around, though."
As they continued to examine the greenhouse, Jade couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to John Wiggle than met the eye. But despite her suspicions, no ghost orchids revealed themselves amongst the thriving flora.
"Agent Higgins," John said, addressing Connor with an air of trepidation, "What exactly is this about? Why are you so interested in ghost orchids?"
"Ghost orchids have been linked to the deaths of both Olivia Black and Lauren Chan," Connor replied, his tone measured. He watched as John's face paled at the mention of their names.
"Olivia...I loved her," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "I would never hurt her. And I don't even know who this Lauren person is."
"Mr. Wiggle," Jade interjected, studying him closely, "If you truly had nothing to do with their deaths, cooperating with us will only help your case. We're just trying to find the truth."
"Look," John continued, desperation creeping into his voice. "I was out of the country at the time Olivia was killed. I was visiting my sister in Canada. You can call her and ask, even check my travel records." He paused, swallowing hard before he added, "I would never have hurt my darling Olivia. I loved her, and liked to think she loved me too, even if we never spoke directly."
Jade studied him as he spoke, her eyes narrowing slightly. The sincerity in his voice was undeniable, but there was still something unsettling about his fixation on a woman who barely knew he existed, if she even knew at all.
